About me
“An unexamined life is not worth living.''
(Socrates)
I am a human being first and foremost! I aim to be so authentically myself, so that you can be yourself too. I have a sense of humour which will become apparent as we work together. I believe this is essential to the work we do!
I am a cis, bisexual and queer woman with strong feminist leanings. In my life experience I have often felt ‘othered’, which is why it is so important to me to make space for other psychotherapists who have felt this way in their work.
The work I do with both clients and supervisees is specialised. Simply put - most supervisors don't have the lived experiences of being LGBTQ or experiences of working with these groups of clients. I appreciate that it is difficult to find supervision which centres the experiences of marginalised people. If this is you, or the people you work with - I can help.
I believe that therapy at its best is transformative. I’ve been in the 'other chair' on many occasions throughout my life. Therapy has helped me work through my own difficulties and created the space for me to work out how I feel about things. It’s given me insight and understanding into who I am and what I’m about.
As a counsellor and psychotherapist, I believe that creating and developing a therapeutic relationship with my clients and supervisees is key. I will work collaboratively with you; meeting you where you are now. I am able to create a safe, warm and confidential space where you can be heard without judgment. I'm trained to listen carefully, attentively and compassionately to both what you do and don't say. During our sessions we can work in any way that suits you, whether that's a conversation or something a little more creative.
My background is in academia: I studied English Literature and Psychology at Nottingham Trent University and I have an MA in Philosophy and Contemporary English Literature from Goldsmiths College, London. I trained to be a counsellor at the Iron Mill College in Exeter, completing both certificate and diploma courses there. As part of this training, I undertook placement work at both Mid Devon Community Family Trust (https://mdcft.org.uk/) and the Dartmoor Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy (https://dartmoorcounselling.org/) where I continued to volunteer for a further six months after my training formally ended. I am an accredited member of NCPS.
I'm passionate about working with folks from the LGBTQI+ community. In October 2023 I completed training with Gendered Intelligence : 'Working alongside Trans, Gender Diverse and Gender Questioning people.' I am also a member of their Counselling directory.
At heart, I'm a Philosopher. I believe that in the Counselling room, we can uncover your stories, your thoughts and your truths. Let's go on this journey together.
